Mercedes-Benz SL (W 113) “Pagoda”

The Mercedes-Benz W113 “Pagoda”, produced from 1963 to 1971, is one of the most iconic grand tourers of the 20th century. Designed by Paul Bracq, its distinctive concave hardtop is reminiscent of an Asian pagoda. This is what gave the car its enduring nickname. Built on a safety-oriented unibody chassis with front and rear crumple zones, it was the world’s first sports car with a safety cage, setting new standards for occupant protection.

Introduced as a balanced successor to the 190 SL and 300 SL, the W113 combined sporty elegance with long-distance comfort, making it ideal for European grand touring. It gained fame in motorsport, winning the 1963 Spa-Sofia-Liège Rally, a grueling 5,500 km endurance race. Celebrities like John Lennon, Sophia Loren, and Audrey Hepburn owned Pagodas, drawn to its understated luxury and timeless design.
Today, it remains a staple at events like the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where its blend of engineering and style continues to captivate enthusiasts.

The Pagoda delivers a composed, confidence-inspiring drive—perfect for sweeping through the Tuscan hills or along the Amalfi Coast. Its inline-six engine provides smooth, linear power, while the double-wishbone front suspension and rear swing axle offer predictable handling. Steering is direct yet relaxed, with excellent feedback, and the chassis remains stable at high speeds.

Despite its weight (~1,360 kg), the 280 SL’s 170 hp and 240 Nm of torque ensure strong performance, with a top speed of 200 km/h (124 mph). The 4-speed manual or optional automatic transmission makes it accessible for long tours. Later models feature four-wheel disc brakes, enhancing stopping power for modern roads. It’s not a sharp sports car, but a refined GT that rewards smooth inputs and connects driver to journey making ideal for vintage car tours through Italy, France and beyond.
